Creative and Managing Director, Pixels & Print Design Workshop

Entering into it’s 5th year, this workshop has one focus that remains the same each year which is, design for good. When I first created this workshop the intent was to teach the students the power of design by having them all collaborate together on one project for a deserving client. The first year we held in the fall, but have since moved this to the spring semester, hence the gab in the years listed.

Each fall, I accept applications from deserving clients all around the world, and then I have the students vote on which project they would like to complete. I assess the design needs, and divide up the tasks and complete them all in just 48 hours. This would not be possible without the collaborative efforts of the students, faculty, staff, and the professional coaches we invite to help mentor the students, many of whom are alumni of the program. Everything from the energy in the room, to watching the seniors helping the freshman, to seeing all the hard work come together in the final moments, to the look on our client’s face at the final presentation are just some of my favorite parts of this workshop.

Mygration:
Partnering with the My Journey to Freedom project, led by the Reza Visual Academy, looking to create a collective memory archive for refugees who have been forced to leave their homes and memories behind. The students first renamed the project to Mygration, then they designed a logo and brand system, a very mobile-friendly website, promotional and social motion graphics, an augmented-reality app looking to overcome language barriers, as well as a poster campaign. Final production on this years website and application are in the final stages and will be released this fall.

Soul of Syracuse:
Southside of Syracuse is looking to reform their community to focus on revitalizing the neighborhood that currently struggles with high unemployment, concentrated poverty, and under-performing schools. The students designed a logo, a website, neighborhood signage, a redesigned publication, neighborhood maps, and impact campaign posters to help jump-start the community’s mission to reform. The project is powered by the TNT Southside task force, and they are still working adding their content to the site.

One in Twenty:
1 in 20 is a living, breathing community offering validation, support and a creative outlet for people coping with and surviving mental illness. The intent is to have a safe space where people can share stories, photos, and messages with those who are struggling or helping support those in their life affected with mental illness. The students designed a website, a motion explainer video, a campaign logo and stationery, as well as merchandise.
