MOTION gRAPHICS: After effects

STUDENTS: Military Motion Media (MMM) students as part of the Military Visual Journalism program at Newhouse.

This course explores ways to use space and time to partner design, photography, video, or standalone animation and 3D projects. Students explore and develop sequential design skills through motion graphic processes and techniques. It is a required course for all Military Motion Media students as part of the Military Visual Journalism program at Newhouse. This is a one-credit course. Students in this course have a range of knowledge of Adobe After Effects, working in 3D space, and designing for time-based media. They have a strong foundation of video workflows, which helps those who are new to motion graphics. Many of them do not, however, have a background in design.

Project #1: TITLE SEQUENCE

This project teaches students about incorporating type into their video-based projects by creating a title sequence for an existing project they are working on in other courses. We also talk about type and how to choose a typeface.

Project #2: MOTION explainer

Motion Explainer: In this project, students create an explainer piece to help breakdown a current topic or event in the news in a simplified way using motion graphics.

Project #3: Motion reel

Either 30 or 60 seconds long, the reel was a collection of all the work they completed over the course of the semester. They could include other pieces they produced that helped them promote their identity as a storyteller.
